Changes to sale management

We've made changes to Sale Management based on feedback that we've received. These are the first in a series of improvements to the sales and promotions features designed to improve reporting, increase predicability in sales behavior, and reduce confusion for new users.

What do I need to know?

Here's what you need to know based on the first round of updates.

  • All sales are now set up through Products > Promotions > Sale Management.
  • Sales are activated and deactivated based on the start date and the end date in the sales parameters, thus, you must enter a start date and an end date for every sale.
  • If you have an active sale without dates as of December 29th, 2020, it will be assigned a start date of December 1, 2020, and an end date of December 31, 2021.
  • Sales in the promotional sale list are activated all at once, not individually, using Apply Sale Pricing.
  • GlobalTill defaults to the lowest active sale price if a product is in multiple active sales at once.

Before the changes

Here's an overview of the Sale Management feature before the changes.

  • Sales in the promotional sale list were activated in chronological order. This created issues if a product was in multiple sales with conflicting discounts. For example, if Widget A was scheduled to discount by 10% starting today, but Widget A was also in a sale scheduled to end today, the sale price would be deactivated in both sales when the second sale ended.
  • Individual products could be placed on sale using a field in the UI called Current Price, without setting up a sale in Sale Management. This created confusion around why a product was currently on sale when there wasn't a corresponding sale in Sale Management.
  • Sales in Sale Management could be activated and deactivated individually.

After the changes

Here's an overview of the Sale Management feature after the changes.

  • All sales require a start date and end date.
  • GlobalTill defaults to the lowest active sale price if a product is in multiple active sales at once.
  • The Current Price field has been removed from the UI. All sales must be created through Sales Management.
  • Sales in Sale Management can no longer be activated and de-deactivated individually. Instead, sales are activated based on their start and end date by selecting Apply Sale Pricing.
  • GlobalTill reflects the name of the most recent sale in select reporting if a product is in multiple active sales at once.
  • Non-active or non-discountable products will have any sale pricing removed during the activation sequence.
  • For multi-store clients who manage data in a centralized main environment, individual sale line items are no longer highlighted green when they are on sale.

What's coming next?

These changes are the precursor to several larger changes. Our development team is now working on improving the Sales Wizard by adding additional fields, and creating a bulk import of sales pricing that can be applied to multiple single stores at once, multiple provinces at once, or multiple price zones at once.
